GROWING UP LATINO!

A CELEBRATION OF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

ALL ABOUT HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15th – October 15th every year.  It is a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, culture, and extensive history of the American Latino community.  What started out as just a week-long recognition back in 1968, has grown into an entire month as of 1988.  Since then, the month has been celebrated nationwide with festivals, art shows, conferences, community gatherings, and much more!

The September 15th date is significant as it celebrates the start of a string of independence days for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15 – Mexico on September 16th – and Chile on September 18th.  Also included are holidays that recognize Hispanic contributions such as the Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Day which is celebrated in the US Virgin Islands the second Monday in October.

Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month I will be highlighting individuals who have made great contributions in their chosen profession and the community at large.

ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE…

Mr. Carlosluis Perez is my very special guest today.  Carlosluis was born in Washington Heights in NYC, grew up in the Dominican Republic, and then returned to New York at the age of 15.  Carlosluis is a first-generation college graduate and is passionate about college accessibility.  As a result, he has spent the last 10 years helping students gain admissions to some of the top colleges and universities in the country.  Carlosluis’ college journey started at the Borough of Manhattan Community College where he earned an Associate’s degree in Business Administration.  From there he transferred to the City College of New York where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, while working part-time as a College Counselor for recent immigrants.

After completing his undergraduate education, Carlosluis joined the New York University College Advising Corps as he worked on his Master’s degree in Social Work.  During the years that followed, Carlosluis worked his way up to becoming the Director of College Counseling at a high school in the South Bronx.  Carlosluis then transitioned to KIPP NYC College Prep 3 years ago where he works as a College Counselor. In addition, Carlosluis is currently pursuing a EDD in Higher Education Administration and Student Affairs at New York University.  When he is not advocating for his students, Carlosluis is traveling the world, exploring NYC, or trying out new restaurants.
